Spontaneity: The Planner’s Nemesis

From the bleak title above you would immediately assume that I am one who finds solace in the planning of every possible aspect of my life. To some extent, you would be correct. But let me enlighten you all with a personal story of mine…

Here is the hypothetical, the scenario if you will. You are young and carefree and intend to make a trip to Sydney, aiming to do as much as possible throughout the day. Before leaving, you want to cram as much stuff as you can into that day, don’t you?

Maybe it’s just me, but if the original purpose of the trip was to explore the retail wonderland that is Sydney and its surrounding suburbs, going into the Reject Shop seems like a waste of time. Therefore, the trip via train and several buses is deemed pointless.

Knowing public transport, and how much Sydneysiders complain about its inefficiencies, the train should take an hour or two followed by the long and sweaty trip on the bus into Castle Hill.

The coda, or moral of this story is to not just always cruise through life because life is short. We should all squeeze every last drop out of life that we can while we can. Certainly I don’t forbid or prohibit spontaneity, just to limit it at times, because spontaneity is the planner’s nemesis. So know your intentions and stick to them.

I learnt this lesson the hard way; spontaneity caused me to miss an appointment with my driving instructor. Getting a licence will take ever longer…
